100th Workshop Celebration for LEAF Progam

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 19th, 2019) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program is excited to announce their 100th LEAF Workshop Celebration to be held on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 from 6pm to 9pm at the Falcon’s Nest in Falconer (2001 East Main Street, Falconer, NY 14733). The evening will feature a locally sourced meal, engaging speakers, door prizes, and reflections on the LEAF (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) program. This event will be an opportunity for the community to celebrate agriculture, education, and local food. All are invited to attend.

In celebration of the LEAF program and our county’s agricultural industry, CCE-Chautauqua will be bringing together past participants, past instructors, and the general public to learn more about the program and hear from a great line up of speakers. Leading the evening’s events will be Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Educator with CCE-Chautauqua. She will be sharing information about the program’s community impact, success stories, and offering an update of the new Census of Agriculture information. Community partners will be on hand to share more about their organizations and resources. Featured speakers will be the highlight of the evening, and will be leading discussions on agricultural topics.

Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello will be on hand to discuss updates from the county. Julia Freedgood, who is currently the Assistant Vice President of Programs for the national organization, American Farmland Trust, will be speaking on the importance of preserving our rural landscapes and sustaining our agricultural industry. Concluding the evening will be the Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Chris Watkins, joining us from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, who will be sharing more about Cooperative Extension and Cornell University’s role in agriculture programming.

LEAF (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) is an original program that was developed by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County in 2015. The LEAF program connects our area’s residents, homesteaders, farmers, and agricultural enthusiasts to educational resources through workshops, on-site consultations, and the Western New York Beginning Farmers and Homesteaders Community to continue to diversify and grow agriculture in Chautauqua County. Developed in 2015, the program has offered 100 workshops on various agricultural topics, from beekeeping to business planning, soap making to raising poultry, and soil health to social media. Over 2,000 people have attended a LEAF Workshop in the program’s history.

General admission will be $20/person to cover meal costs. Past LEAF Workshop Attendees can attend for $10/person, and the event will be free for past LEAF Workshop instructors.
