Learn, Empower, Achieve, Farm (LEAF) Junior workshops teach youth ages 5-18 life skills

LEAF Junior Classes Begin October 2, 2019

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (September 20, 2019) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County is offering hands-on workshops for youth ages 5-18 this fall. The LEAF (Learn, Empower, Achieve, Farm) Workshop series was created by Katelyn Walley-Stoll in 2016 and offered classes for beginning farmers and homesteaders. LEAF Junior offers similar classes for youth with a focus on traditional life skills.

The LEAF Junior series kicked off in the spring with a class on wool-felted soap. Youth learned about wool, working with fiber, and the art of wool felting. This fall six classes are being offered to area youth. Many of the classes were made possible by a large donation of fabric, notions, and a sewing machine from the Chautauqua Region Quilt Guild. Kate Ewer, 4-H Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, is excited about the new classes, stating, “LEAF Junior is a great opportunity for all youth, not just those who are enrolled in our 4-H program, to be creative and learn a new skill. Chautauqua County 4-H reflects the principles of positive youth development, experiential learning, and the importance of having fun.”

LEAF Junior classes are open to all youth ages 5-18. Youth who are not enrolled in 4-H and all youth ages 5-8 must be accompanied by an adult for the entire class. Classes will be held at the Carnahan Center on the Jamestown Community College Campus located at 525 Falconer Street in Jamestown. Nancy Johnson, 4-H volunteer extraordinaire, is teaching all workshops unless otherwise noted. For more information or to register go to www.cce.cornell.edu/chautauqua or call 716-664-9502 ext. 214.
