Raising Poultry for Egg Production

Six Class Options Coming Up Through the L.E.A.F. Program

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (October 18, 2017) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program is excited to announce that they will be offering several workshops this season as part of their 2017-2018 L.E.A.F. (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) Workshop Series. “Raising Poultry for Egg Production” will be a three course series offered at multiple times at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown, NY 14701. The cost to attend is $10/each class or $25 to attend all three classes. Class #1: Housing and Equipment will be offered on Thursday, October 26th, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm or Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from 10am to 12noon. Class #1 will cover site analysis, equipment ‘checklist’, housing options, predator control, supplies, cleaning and will include a demonstration on making a dust bath and cleaning equipment.

Class #2: Chick Care, Hen Nutrition, and Health will be offered on Monday, October 30th, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm or Saturday, November 18th, 2017 from 10am – 12noon. Class #2 will cover breed selection, baby basics, sourcing, feed selection, disease prevention, adult care and will highlight a demonstration on growing fodder and handling chicks upon receipt.

Class #3: Egg Production, Marketing, and Regulations will be offered on Monday, November 28th, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm or Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from 10am to 12noon. Class #3 will cover egg production, egg handling and care, selling and marketing your eggs, regulations to follow. Demonstration on egg candling and carton labelling.

“Even if you’ve come to one of our poultry workshops in the past, we welcome you to come to any of the classes in this series,” stated Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County. “We’ll be covering more of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of raising chickens, and will be incorporating some hands-on demonstrations”. Walley-Stoll also stated that the series is appropriate for beginning poultry raisers or those that are just interested in learning more about the topic.

Interested participants can choose to attend one class or all three classes. There are weeknight and weekend options for each class, and each class participant will receive a resource guide with informational handouts and reference materials, opportunity for hands-on demonstrations, and the option for follow up consultations.

The L.E.A.F. Workshop Series is open to the general public, including homesteaders, beginning farmers, established farmers looking to diversify and grow, agriculture enthusiasts, and everyone in between! The 2017-2018 Workshop Series will feature over 20 workshops to be held throughout the upcoming Fall and Winter months. This season’s L.E.A.F. Program is made possible through the generous support of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
