CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION TEAMS UP WITH THE CHAUTAUQUA MALL TO “RECYCLE THE RUNWAY”

Farmers market upcycled fashion show

-By Wendy Sanfilippo, Natural Resources Educator

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (June 17, 2015) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Natural Resources Program recently partnered with the Chautauqua Mall to put on a type of reverse fashion show where everything is created from something old rather than new. Taking something you already have and making it better is often referred to as “Upcycling”. The event will take place on July 8th during the farmers market at the mall from 1-2 pm. The Chautauqua Mall farmers market is open from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm every Wednesday through August 26th. We hope you will come out and support the market as well as the participants in this show.

Categories for contest entries in this fashion show include:

• Thrift store upcycle – mostly made from thrift store or consignment store items

• Closet upcycle – mostly made from items already owned or given

• Accessories – made from items owned or purchased at the thrift or consignment store

• Reverse fashion – items so old or out of fashion it just works

• Holiday Horror – think “ugly sweater contest” but open to anything

• Wearable art – any medium mixed with textiles

If you’re looking for a fun family activity now that school is getting out, get together and design some new fashion from what you already have and let’s “Recycle the Runway”. Get your creativity going and enter you creations with Cynde at the Chautauqua Mall at
