Ted Card Honored with the New York Beef Producers Association President's Award

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 23, 2020) – Ted Card, beef cattle producer from Moon Meadow Farm in Jamestown, NY was recognized with the 2019 President’s Award, at the NY Beef Producers Association Annual Winter Conference and Meeting held in Syracuse, NY in February 2020. This award is presented to a member who is actively involved and providing a positive impact on the beef industry.

Phil Trowbridge, of Trowbridge Farms, Ghent, NY, Executive Council President of the New York Beef Producers Association enthusiastically presented Ted Card with the President’s Award. According to Phil Trowbridge, “Ted was an easy pick for the President’s award as he has been invaluable to me this year in my role as President. I can always rely on him for a very straight forward answer. Ted is a true visionary, he helped us create a vaccination protocol that has been embraced by the membership, and he has really been a great supporter of the Beef Quality Assurance program (BQA). Ted is in line to be the next president of the NY Beef Producers Association and will be a perfect fit for the job.”

Ted and his wife Cathy operate Moon Meadow Farm, which includes 30 beef cow/calf pairs of Hereford, Shorthorn and Angus cattle. Both their daughter Katelyn, a local veterinarian, and son Chad who works for the Town of Ellicott Highway Department, also help on the family’s beef farm. Their family markets high quality beef sides and some packaged meat cuts to local customers.

Ted is a leader in the Chautauqua County Beef Producer’s Association, currently serving as president of the group; Chairman of Region 2 NYBPA; and has served in the past on the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County Ag Program Committee and CCE 4-H Beef Advisory Committee. Ted is always available and spends much time advising and mentoring new beef producers. He has been a member of the NY Beef Producers Association for 13 years and serves as the 2020-2021 Vice President of the NY Beef Producers Association.

Ted has helped lead the development and implementation of the NYS Feeder Calf Health Protocol, along with Shannon Carpenter, DVM, NYS Ag & Markets and Mike Baker, Beef Cattle Extension Specialist, Cornell University. This program has encouraged local producers to pre-condition their feeder calves according to a recommended protocol and has improved prices received per head.

Ted is an excellent spokesperson for the cattle industry. Ted is BQA certified, has hosted many BQA workshops on his family’s farm, and helps plan recertification trainings for new and experienced beef producers. He has also completed the Masters of Beef Advocacy program (MBA) and Beef Corp to further his knowledge and skills to better communicate with consumers in his efforts to educate others about the beef industry.

Maintaining a positive public perception of their beef cattle operation is very important to Ted and his family. Moon Meadow Farm is an attractive farmstead that passerby can recognize as a BQA certified farm, as the Card family proudly displays their farm name and colorful BQA sign along the roadside. Their clean, comfortable cattle can be seen from the roadside grazing in their pastures or enjoying the fresh air outside the barn in a well-maintained fenced area.

Lisa Kempisty, Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County stated, “Our Southwestern NY area, as well as New York State is fortunate to have Ted Card leading our beef producers. Congratulations to Ted on this recognition and continued success with his family’s beef farm and his many activities with our NY beef industry!”
