Un "BEEF"lievably Excellent Animals

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (July 20, 2025) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Beef Program is excited to announce the results of the 2025 Annual Beef Steer and Breeding show at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, Dunkirk NY. Judging the show was Jennifer Hoelscher from Eden NY.

The Grand Champion Steer of 2025 was raised and shown by Madison Hotchkiss of Sherman, NY the Reserve Champion Steer as well as the Third Overall Steer was raised and shown by Parker Schauman of Ashville, NY. Laine Carpenter of Falconer raised the Fourth Overall Steer and Levi Hotchkiss showed the Fifth Overall Steer.

All 4-H Beef Project participants attend meetings throughout the year to gain knowledge about their animals. Beef steers can weigh from 1,000-1,600 pounds which is much more than the handler weighs. It takes over a year to raise a steer to finish and a lot of hard work to produce a quality meat carcass.

In the Breeding Beef Heifer portion of the program, Parker Schauman of Ashville, NY won Supreme Female with his heifer JMSC Miss High Class. Laine Carpenter of Falconer won Reserve Female with his heifer Candy.

Showmanship classes judge the participants to see how well they can control and show their cattle. The Champion Heifer Showman for 2025 was Parker Schauman of Ashville, NY. Reserve Champion Heifer Showman was Laine Carpenter of Falconer, NY. Parker Schauman also won Champion Steer Showman and Logan Griffith of Kennedy, NY won Reserve Steer Showman.

The Beef Steer Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state.
