Speaker Bios:

Lori Brockelbank "Good Trees for the Area"

Lori Brockelbank is an area manager with DRG. Ms. Brockelbank is responsible for providing operational, fiscal, and sales support to the consulting team in Western New York. Her primary responsibilities include quality control; technical consulting and plan writing; tree assessments; tree ordinance interpretation; tree preservation activities; tree/timber appraisals; arboricultural training; urban wood utilization investigations; expert witness testimony; and outreach and educational programs. Ms. Brockelbank has experience in both traditional forestry and urban forestry. She has assisted with resource management on state and private lands in various counties throughout New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. She specializes in tree inventories, urban forest management/master plan writing, and contract processes (writing, bidding, and administration). Ms. Brockelbank also focuses on private and community land activities that include insect/disease diagnosis, tree planting plans and inspections, and working with municipalities to obtain Tree City USA status. Ms. Brockelbank has expertise in Davey’s TreeKeeper® software suite for inventory management as well as the USDA Forest Service i-Tree software suite (tools for assessing community forests). She has taught an Introduction to Urban Forestry course at Jamestown Community College and has instructed at numerous Master Gardener programs. As a business developer in her home state of New York, Ms. Brockelbank provides community and urban forestry solutions focusing on outreach, planting, and risk management. Ms. Brockelbank is an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist and Municipal Specialist (NY-5326AM) and is also Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) through ISA. She is a Certified Applicator in New York in Category 3a, 2 and 5a. She is a Registered Consulting Arborist (#807). She is immediate past president of the New York State Arborist Association and an executive board member of the New York State Urban Forestry Council. Ms. Brockelbank is also a graduate of the Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI). Ms. Brockelbank graduated from SUNY-ESF (College of Environmental Science and Forestry), where she holds a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management.

Ken Parker "Choosing Native Plants for Gardening Success"

This presentation will highlight the benefits of using plant material that is native to our region and introduce specific plants to fit in a variety of challenging garden environments.

Ken Parker is currently the grower and nursery manager for The English Gardener Landscape Company. He is a passionate indigenous horticulturist and member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. He is a NY State Certified Nursery Landscape Professional (CNLP) and Green Infrastructure Program Trainer.

Ken has spent much of his life devoted to growing, installing, teaching and promoting indigenous plants of North America. He has participated in various environmental projects, including conservation, restoration, corporate landscaping, green infrastructure, education, marketing and consulting throughout the United States and Canada over the past twenty-five years. He frequently gives talks on native plants and consults with groups throughout North America.

When Ken is not busy with plants, he can be found playing saxophone around town or cheering for the Bills.
