JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (June 12, 2024) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension Chautauqua County’s 4-H Program is excited to take part in the annual online fundraiser Give Big CHQ on June 13th, 2024. This year, Chautauqua County 4-H has a goal of reaching $2,000 to cover the cost in four areas during the program year, including LEAF Jr. registrations, Teen Ambassador development opportunities, CPR and AED training for volunteers, and Senior Banner sponsors.
One program area is LEAF Jr. Classes. Donors can cover the registration fee for the workshop, allowing youth to participate in the class. LEAF Jr. Classes are an opportunity for youth to learn new skills that help promote empowerment and achievement. LEAF Jr. classes are open to all youth, regardless of whether they are enrolled in 4-H. Classes that have been taught in the past include cheese making, wood sign making, bird suet, recycled bags, and cupcake decorating. In the fall, 4-H is looking at offering classes related to cooking, food preservation, STEM activities, gardening, and quilting.
Another program run through Chautauqua County 4-H is the Teen Ambassador leadership group. Teen Ambassadors are 4-H youth aged 13 and older who express interest in gaining leadership skills and career exploration opportunities. In February 2024, (4) Teen Ambassadors from Chautauqua County joined youth from Cattaraugus County 4-H and traveled to Michigan State University for a Career Explorations Conference. The 4-H youth explored the campus, learned about programs offered, and discussed making more defined plans for their future careers. The group has discussed more trips for the future, including Penn State, Ohio State, and West Virgina State University.
Chautauqua County 4-H would also like to give the opportunity for volunteers and older 4-H youth to participate in CPR and AED training. Though there are safety measures in place, having volunteers trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) would be an added benefit.
Banners for 4-H Seniors is the fourth area that Chautauqua County 4-H would like to have sponsors for through Give Big CHQ. Every year, we like to recognize the graduating seniors for their hard work and dedication to the 4-H program by presenting them with banners to commemorate their time. These banners can be seen walking through barns and the 4-H buildings at the 2024 Chautauqua County Fair.

The 4-H Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
