JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 27th, 2022) – Local 4-H dairy members represented Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program by participating in the Western District Dairy Quiz Bowl competition at Pioneer Middle School in Yorkshire, NY on Saturday, March 5, 2022.

Dairy Bowl is a quiz bowl where the youth answer questions related to dairy cattle and the dairy industry, and are recognized on their placings, as individuals and as teams. The primary objective of the 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest is to provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to demonstrate their knowledge of dairy related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Dairy Bowl is an educational experience for both participants and spectators.

A total of 50 4-H members represented 14 teams from four Western New York counties in the event. The competition included beginner, junior, and senior levels. Chautauqua County 4-H had twelve participants compete on three teams in the contest.

Congratulations to the following Chautauqua County youth on their 4-H Dairy Bowl achievements. In the beginner division we had four 4-Her’s place in the top ten individuals. In 10th place we had Clara Carlberg, 9th Isabella Jones, 7th Laine Carpenter, all part of the Frewsburg Hayseeds club, and finishing in 1st, Tyler Crowell of the Country Critters club. In the team competition, Chautauqua County took 1st.

The junior division team achieved 5th overall, with Grace Meyer receiving 7th place individual from the Country Critters club. Much success came from the senior division as the team took 2nd with Larsen Swan holding 8th place as a lone member and Dayne Jantzi placing 2nd from the Sherman Kountry Kids. A big thanks to the coaches of the Chautauqua County 4-H Dairy Bowl teams, Mary Jantzi, and Anna & Dan Crowell.

A special congratulations to Dayne Jantzi on his recent accomplishments in the NYS 4-H Dairy Bowl Competition held at Cornell University on April 23rd, 2022. Dayne participated on the team with members from Niagara and Wyoming Counties. He outperformed the other participating youth placing him in 3rd for this NYS competition earning him a place on the team that represents all of NYS at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. Unfortunately, due to age requirements in NYS, Dayne cannot compete in the national competition. He will be practicing for next year in hopes he can accomplish this achievement again.

Tyler Crowell, having placed 1st in the beginner division at the Western District Contest, will be showcased at the NYS Fair in August 2022 for a sample match for fair visitors to learn what the contest entails.
