4-H Sewing Class Updates

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (December 14, 2022) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Program continues to offer sewing opportunities for 4-H youth. As they take the lead in teaching valuable sewing skills, members of the Family Consumer Science committee, Nancy Johnson and Sue Harper, are exceptional at following the 4-H approach, teaching youth to “learn-by-doing”. During the months of October and December eager 4-H’ers have been assisted in developing their sewing abilities and enjoy creating projects of their own.

In October, youth learned basic hand sewing, became familiar with the parts of a sewing machine, learned basic sewing machine trouble shooting, practiced basic stitches on the sewing machine and then used their new knowledge to make a small pillow. In December, the youth continued to build their sewing understanding and skills as they constructed pillowcases using the burrito pillowcase pattern, consisting of 3 different fabrics to form the pillowcase body, trim, and cuff. They also learned how to create French seams ensuring that no raw edges are visible.

Youth participating in sewing projects will qualify to be evaluated at the Spring 4-H Clothing Evaluation Day and participate at the 4-H Fashion Revue scheduled to be held on Friday, May 12, 2023. Youth will also be able to bring their sewing projects to 4-H Evaluation Day, associated with the Chautauqua County Fair, and exhibit these in the 4-H Building during Fair week for all fair visitors to view.

4-H is a community of youth that come together from diverse backgrounds to make their lives and communities better. 4-H youth “learn by doing” through club-based learning with the assistance of adult volunteer mentors. Do you know any youth, ages 5 to 18, that would benefit from participating in 4-H? If so, please reach out to the Chautauqua County 4-H office at 716-664-9502 ext. 214 or by email at lmc323@cornell.edu for additional information!

The 4-H Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
