Chautauqua County Beekeepers' Association to Host Meeting in May

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 26, 2024) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua’s Master Gardener Program would like to share the announcement that the Chautauqua County Beekeepers Association (CCBA) will host their next monthly meeting on Thursday, May 9th at 7:00pm at the Fluvanna Community Church, 3363 Fluvanna Avenue Jamestown, NY.

May’s topic will focus on honeybee swarms! Swarming occurs when the queen and about half the colony (5,000 to 20,000 worker bees) abscond from their hive and rest on a tree branch, or other structure while scout bees go out looking for a hollow space in which to make their new home. It may take a few hours or up to two days for a new home to be chosen. Bees in a swarm are not aggressive or inclined to sting while they search for a new home. Swarms are fascinating and fun if you are lucky enough to see one! Join us and learn everything you need to know about catching a swarm and steps to prevent your honeybees from swarming.

Meetings are scheduled for the second Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. You do not need to be a beekeeper to join, and all are welcome. We hope to see you there!

The Master Gardener Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
