Growing Your Food Series

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (May 14, 2024) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H and Master Gardener Program is excited to announce a new series of free classes called “Growing Your Food” taking place in the Kitchen Garden space at the Audubon Community Nature Center.

Spring is a great time to consider starting a produce garden. Through the “Growing Your Food” series, Master Gardeners, Audubon Volunteers, and 4-H educators will walk through the process of planning your garden, caring for it throughout the season, and harvesting the delicious food. Classes are from 5:30-7:00pm at the Audubon Community Nature Center starting at the pavilion and moving to the Kitchen Garden Space on Thursdays throughout the summer.

The first class of the series called Starting your Garden happened May 9th, 2024, and discussed the considerations to make when planning a garden and how to get it started strong. Upcoming classes in the 2024 season include Composting 101 on June 6th, Promoting Pollination on June 27th, In Season Plant Care on July 25th, and Harvesting from the Garden on August 29th. Youth and adults are welcome to attend, free of charge.

The 4-H Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
