Chautauqua County 4-H Celebrates Day of Service

4-Hers to Celebrate Day of Service

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 18, 2018) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program is holding a community service workshop for youth enrolled in the program on Saturday, April 21st from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The 4-H Day of Service is sponsored by the 4-H Teen Ambassadors, a leadership club for youth age 14 and over. The local day of service is a part of the National 4-H True Leaders in Service initiative, a way for 4-H members to say “thank you” to their communities and to promote creative and service projects across the nation.

In Chautauqua County youth will have the opportunity to make first aid kits for Chautauqua Rural Ministries, centerpieces for Meals on Wheels recipients, and design greeting cards for area service members. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to a local food pantry as well.

Community service is one of the four pillars of 4-H. Youth are encouraged to “pledge their hands to larger service.” New York State values connecting families to their communities and to one another. In 2017, 90 youth participated in 620 hours of documented community service projects. Chautauqua County 4-H hopes to grow that number with help from the 4-H Day of Service.

The 4-H Youth Development Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a community based educational organization, affiliated with Cornell University, Chautauqua County Government, the NYS SUNY system, and the federal government through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
