FARMERS MARKET SEASON BEGINS

CCE-Chautauqua Announces Chautauqua County’s Markets

-By Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (May 21, 2015) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program is excited to announce the beginning of Farmers Market Season this Memorial Day weekend. There are currently 9 Farmers Markets in the county, and many have started for the season or will in the coming weeks.

“Farmers Markets represent a huge part of Chautauqua County’s Agricultural industry,” says Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension. “The markets are a great resource and source of economic development for our county’s consumers and farmers. The collaborative design also allows consumers to really see where their food comes from, and gives farmers the opportunity to tell their stories to consumers.”

Chautauqua County is home to over 1,500 farms, and more than 100 are selling their products directly to consumers, through farm stores, roadside stands, and farmers markets. Many farmers markets also accept SNAP, EBT, WIC, FNMP, and Debit/Credit cards.

The nine markets in Chautauqua County, and their times, include: Chautauqua Mall, Wednesdays 11- 4 starting June 3rd; Downtown Jamestown, Thursdays 12-6 starting June 4th; Dunkirk, Wednesdays 9-2 starting June 18th; Falconer, Saturdays 9-2 starting June 6th; Fredonia, Saturdays 9-1 starting May 16th; Lakewood, Tuesdays 1-5 starting June 2nd; Sherman, Saturdays 10-2 starting May 23rd; Westfield, Saturdays 9-2 starting May 23rd; and Crossroads Farm and Craft Market, Saturdays 9-5 starting May 2nd.

Support to our County Farmers Markets is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a community based educational organization, affiliated with Cornell University, Chautauqua County Government, the NYS SUNY system, and the federal government through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
