LEAF Jr Soil Crayon Workshop Announced

FALCONER, NEW YORK (May 14, 2021) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Program invites area youth to participate in their upcoming LEAF Junior Soil Crayon workshop that will be held May 26, 2021 at 6:00pm at the Carnahan Center located on the SUNY JCC campus.

The LEAF (Learn, Empower, Achieve, Farm) workshop series was created for adult learners on beginning farmer and homesteading topics. The 4-H Youth Development program wanted to extend those programs further by offering fun, engaging classes for all youth in the area and LEAF Junior was born.

Molly Brown, 4-H Educator and STORY Project leader will be teaching the workshop based on the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) soil crayons curriculum. Youth ages 8-18 are welcome to come and learn about one of our most important natural resources: soil! The lesson will be followed by an activity where youth will make their own crayons using soil. Participants will take home the crayons that they create. Registration is open through Friday, May 21st and can be found at www.cce.cornell.edu/chautauqua or by calling 716-664-9502 ext. 212. The workshop fee is $10 for youth enrolled in Chautauqua County 4-H and $12 for community members.

This workshop is sponsored in part by the Science and Technology Opportunities for Rural Youth (STORY) Program led by CCE 4-H Community Educator Molly Brown. The STORY Project encourages youth to solve real-world problems with science, technology, engineering, and math. Contact Molly Brown for more information at 716-664-9502 ext. 216.

The 4-H Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
