LEAF Workshops Focus on Horses

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (February 4, 2019) -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program is excited to announce the next three workshops in its very popular LEAF (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) Educational programming. On Saturday, February 9th, from 10am to 12noon “Handling and Health Basics” will be offered. Then, on Tuesday, February 19th from 6pm to 8pm, a “NYS Vet Update” will be covered. “Riding Safety and Basics” on Thursday, February 21st from 6pm to 8pm will round out the “Horse Course” series. All workshops will be held at the Frank Bratt Agricultural Center in Jamestown, 3542 Turner Road. On Saturday, February 9th, 2019 from 10am to 12noon, “Horse Course: Handling and Health Basics” will be offered for $5/person. Please join us for this introductory/refresher workshop on the safe handling of equine and preparing for their basic health needs. This workshop will involve hands on and interactive activities. Our instructor will be Emily Reynolds, Executive Director of CCE-Chautauqua. Emily graduated from the University of Findlay with a Bachelors in Equestrian Studies. She is a professional Cowboy Mounted Shooter, has ridden and owned horses her whole life and trained professionally for 15 years in a variety of disciplines, from reining and show horse to trail and pleasure horses. Reynolds will also be teaching “Horse Course: Riding Safety and Basics” on Thursday, February 21st from 6pm to 8pm where she will cover the fundamentals of riding your horse.

On Tuesday, February 19th from 6pm to 8pm, “Horse Course: NYS Vet Update” will be offered for all levels of equestrians. Leading this workshop will be New York State Veterinarian, Dr. Shannon Carpenter, who has many years of experience with livestock animal operations and has previously worked as a private veterinarian. Dr. Carpenter will be discussing interstate and intrastate travel with your horse, bio-security measures that everyone should have in place, common reportable diseases, and the importance of vaccinations.

Light refreshments will be offered. The LEAF workshops are designed to be interactive, so participants are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas to this collaborative environment! These workshops will be held at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center located at 3542 Turner Road in Jamestown, NY.
