“Stress Less Farm Financials: Beginning Record-Keeping and Reducing Farm and Family Stress” will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 6-8 pm for $5 per person. Your dream career in farming is going great. Except for the weather, uncooperative neighbors, a non-communicative family member, and the occasional livestock or plant-growing issue… Yes, farming is stressful. There are many things out of your control and your farm is also your lifestyle, so it is hard to leave the stress at the office. However, you can implement some key strategies to make farming less stressful. Teresa and Ginny will bring to the class ideas and tips for communication techniques, risk management, self-care and much more. This class will be discussion-style and relaxed, so please bring your questions and ideas! Taught by Ginny Carlberg, Financial Consultant and Teresa McMahon, Family Consultant from NY FarmNet.

The “Is Agri-tourism right for you?” workshop will be held, Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 6-8 pm

$5 per person. Inviting the public onto your farm or agribusiness might be an intimidating prospect - but an important one to help promote our local agricultural industry and your farm business – along with a diversified stream of income. Join Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s SWNY Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program as she discusses the advantages, challenges, and unexpected details that come with inviting any group of people onto the farm. Participants will leave with several resources, ideas, and opportunities for future follow-up.

“Soil Properties and Soil Health” will be offered on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 6-8 pm, for $5 per person. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to inventory the soils on their property, use a soil survey to determine the suitability of their soils for various cropping programs, and how to use crop rotations, cover crops, and the application of organic materials to build a healthy soil. Participants will receive a copy of the Chautauqua County Soil Survey. Leading this workshop will be Robert (Rob) Halbohm, who is currently the Water Quality Technician with the Chautauqua County Soil & Water Conservation District. He retired from the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service after working for 35 years in the field of assisting landowners in the development and implementation of conservation plans to protect their natural resources and maintain a profitable farm operation. He currently works on the District’s Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) program.

Light refreshments will be offered. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to each workshop, and pre-registration is recommended to reserve a seat for the event. This workshop is designed to be interactive, so participants are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas to this collaborative environment!
