Don and Rosalind Heinert’s love for trees and organic beauty
landed them in South Ripley, New York where they established Blueberry Sky Farm
in 1991. Their 72-acre farm features hundreds of organic blueberry bushes where,
from mid-July to early September, you can pick your own berries. The original
barn, built in 1901, still stands and much of the original farm equipment is
still stored within it.
The Blueberry Sky Winery was founded in 1998 as a family project and an outlet
for the Heinert’s adventurous wines. Rosalind was raised in the South, and she
brought along her grandfather’s recipes, dating back to 1885, for tomato and
blackberry wines.
Their love for wine and cooking led them to create other unusual wines that
will fascinate both chefs and foodies alike. These wines include garlic,
jalapeno and tomato. The folks at Blueberry Sky will remind you to not throw
away that last bit of wine in the bottle. It should be used for cooking!
The winemaker, Don Heinert himself, strives to make wines that are high in
quality and old-fashioned in taste. The fruit wines at Blueberry Sky are both
sweet and dry. Some are created from unsprayed fruit grown on their farm. A
must try is their Dandelion Wine, which comes in both dry and sweet versions.
While visiting Blueberry Sky, you can also purchase organic herbs in vinegar,
cheeses, wine jelly, and almond, peanut, cashew and sunflower seed butters.
